Doctor Who Action Figures Collectors Set: The Seeds Of Doom: 4th Doctor & Krynoid 2 Pack (Forbidden Planet Exclusive)

Two alien seed pods are found buried in the Antarctic permafrost. The Fourth Doctor, accompanied by Sarah-Jane Smith, realises that they are from a Krynoid, a form of voracious plant life that infects and transforms all animal life on planets upon which it becomes established.

One of the pods opens and infects a scientist at an Antarctic base but the developing Krynoid is destroyed by a bomb set to cover the tracks of two men, Scorby and Keeler, who have made off with the other pod for their boss, eccentric plant collector Harrison Chase.

The second pod infects Keeler and he also becomes a Krynoid, rapidly growing to giant proportions. UNIT are called in, and they arrange for the Krynoid to be bombed before it can spread its pods across the Earth.

The Press Association has Smith: I won't be Timelord forever
Matt Smith reckons he'll get traded in for a "younger, cooler person" on Doctor Who some day.
The actor has won critical acclaim - and a best actor gong at last week's National Television Awards - since he was announced as the 11th Timelord in 2009.
But the 29-year-old admitted he wouldn't be playing the role forever. "I just sort of take each year as it comes really. We've got all the rest of this year to get through and then we'll just sit down and review it from there and see where it goes," Matt said. "But I love playing the part and I love working with (writer) Steven Moffat." Referring to Tom Baker, the longest-running Doctor Who from 1974 to 1981, he added: "I think there will need to be a younger, cooler person than me - or maybe an older, cooler person, who knows? But I don't think I'll be doing it as long as Mr Baker."
Shooting on the new series starts mid-February and Matt - who will be joined by a new sidekick following the departure of co-star Karen Gillan - said he stays healthy to cope with the hectic filming schedule. "Fruit, vegetables, good sleep if you can and preparation is the key," he explained.

Now I know that my blog is meant to all be about comedy, but I’d like to take a side step into another world that is equally close to my heart if I may…the parallel universe of science fiction.

I’m not just a nerd, but a complete and utter geek on every level, and a lot of my friendships have all formed (or started out initially) after a massive geek-out conversation.
But one science fiction show that has built more friendships than anything else and shaped my entire cultural outlook is Doctor Who. David Tennant was my doctor, Steven Moffat, Russell T Davies and Murray Gold (who provided the kick-ass instrumentals) my icons, and my Saturday nights have never quite been the same since it returned to the TV screens.

Since then I’ve discovered the old doctors, been to conventions, dressed up as Rose for a birthday party (I wanted to be the doctor, but wasn’t allowed), and met people who write kick-ass tunes about the famous time traveller…(don’t know what I’m talking about? Then you need to click here for Steven Seller’s Project Who).
Music about Doctor Who may sound sad ….go on admit it…you’re picturing nerds that don’t leave the house, sitting in their knitted scarves while thinking up their own time travelling theories right?…….well then you need to listen to Chameleon Circuit….you’ll soon change your mind…

Review: Story Number 048 – The Seeds of Death

From the back: In the late 21st century, the human race has become totally dependent on T-Mat, a revolutionary form of instant travel. The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe arrive on Earth just as T-Mat is suffering a malfunction. Sinister Ice Warriors from Mars have seized the lunar T-Mat station to launch an invasion of Earth.
“Your leader will be angry if you kill me! I’m a genius.”
Here we have our second meeting with The Ice Warriors, only this time the Martians are operating from a stronger position. Unfortunately, I didn’t find this story as engaging as The Ice Warriors, which, if you recall, I was conflicted over. In the original story, the Earth was slowly being covered in glaciers and a band of scientists were attempting to find a way to push the ice back. In The Seeds of Death, humanity is somewhat better off, merely having food supply issues–as if that is a minor problem in comparison. More so than previous Doctor Who stories, I had difficulty with the chronological placement of this conflict Ice Warrior history. Was this after The Ice Warriors? Before? If the former, has it been long enough that humanity has forgotten about the previous Ice Warrior encounter? These questions continually popped up as I watched this story, which means I wasn’t entirely engaged. Following the tight pacing of The Invasion, this story drags quite a bit. It would have been interesting to see what Camfield would have done with it. Not that Michael Ferguson does a bad job. His camera-work is quite inventive in a number of scenes.....

Our most basic common link is that we all watch Doctor Who. We all love the same Time Lord. We all cherish the show's future... er, hold on, is that a Dalek battlecruiser up there?

Season 25's action-packed opener, Remembrance of the Daleks, was shown not once, but twice during the early hours of Sunday 11th January 2003, first appearing on UK Gold between 12.30-2.15am and then again, five hours later, from 7.15-9.00am.

The channel's idents were particularly mundane at this time, consisting of a kettle boiling, someone running a bath and, in this case, a woman cutting and buttering a baguette in a bakery window. Evocative of British traditions or just plain cheap and dull? You be the judge.

Eagle-eyed viewers will notice that the 'Part One' caption is missing, and those with keen ears will hear the anachronistic Peter Howell theme at the beginning of some episodes; they were in fact the same videotapes prepared for the story's initial screening on Gold in December 1994, and in those days the Howell theme was often used for the programme's break bumpers.

You can read full details about the box set HERE but, first up it's the 10th Anniversary story, The Three Doctors.

As with my preview of The Robots of Death from the same set, it seems pointless to go over a story that has already been made available on DVD that many of you probably already own. But I will say that The Three Doctors is not, for me, vintage Who. Some of you will already know this, but The Third Doctor era doesn't do much for me; with few stories that I return to from Pertwee's time....

A simple commentary about "Closing Time," which gave the Three Who Rule ample time to discuss the great chemistry between Matt Smith and guest star James Corden, instead devolved into a simply rancid discussion on babies and their propensity to poop on this episode of Radio Free Skaro. Our choice of topic says more about us than it does about the episode at hand, which was a delightful romp penned by Gareth Roberts and not at all a treatise on infants and their digestive habits. But leaving the puerile giggling aside for the moment, weighty matters as fictitious awards, possibly crappy video games and the life and quick death of Doctor Who Insider were also covered. All this and backhanded compliments aimed at Eric Roberts, and you've got yourself approximately an hour of a podcast of some sort!

I am pleased to present once again, in all its glory, the very first Christel Doctor Who episode, Grand Designs. Originally released in 2009 this is the story that begun the Christel Doctor series. I have remastered some of the sound and added two very small scenes into the episode. Posted below is the episode, along with the official synopsis and DVD cover, based on the series of covers that long time supporter Blink used to make. The second of the four 2009 specials, The Planet of Souls, should be ready soon and will be re-uploaded in the same way that this episode has.

Plot Synopsis - Landing in London in the year 2021 the Doctor is immediately faced with a number of difficult challenges. Firstly, the TARDIS is in a bad way and needs work and secondly, the mysterious next of kin seem intent on causing havoc wherever they step. Coupled with a seemingly corrupt and violent UNIT team nothing is as the Doctor remembers it. He soon finds himself in race against time simply to survive.

IN THIS ONE... The TARDIS arrives at the Space Museum, but its crew has jumped a time track and now one can see them, until they find themselves in museum cases and sync up.

REVIEW: Today, so-called "timey-whimey" stories are Doctor Who's bread and butter. And they uses to big good for Star Trek too, until Voyager and Enterprise started using them too much. But early Doctor Who? I wish they didn't. Now, I'm all for seeing The Space Museum through the positive lens introduced by Rob Shearman in the DVD documentary (and in his book, Running Through Corridors), but those elements don't really kick in until the next episode. This is the exploration of a new environment episode, the "what the hell is going on?" episode. And even if I accept Rob's vision of the story as a sort of parody of such stories (and I do), the direction really lets it down. That's why we need to be convinced of the merits of Glyn Jones' script. No wonder, the director is Mervyn Pinfield who also gave us The Sensorites and Planet of Giants. Expect blank, empty, cardboard-looking sets, some measure of technical achievement (in-camera phasing effects), and little focus on performance or making sense of the science involved.....

(Fun fact: this is Erik's favorite period of the show, so he is particularly looking forward to this one.)

Background & Significance: Wanting to push Doctor Who out of the complacency he saw under the purvey of Graham Williams, new producer John Nathan-Turner set about completely re-jiggering the show over the course of its 18th season.The first changes and were small but important when he commissioned a new opening title sequence, musical arrangement of the theme, and standard, codified outfit for The Doctor. The final major change was the turnover of Tom "he-pretty-much-is-Doctor-Who-at-this-point" Baker in the season's finale.

But before he did that, Nathan-Turner did a complete companion turnover.

As with the other turnovers in the season, they came slowly and over time, so as to not be too jarring to the audience. Adric first appeared three stories in and became a full companion proper in the subsequent story. After the escape from E-Space, Nathan-Turner introduced new companion Nyssa in the season's penultimate story, and the final new companion (Tegan) in the season finale. It would leave an over-crowded TARDIS (a problem not really remedied until the departure of Nyssa in "Terminus"), but it still gave a new direction towards "relatability", which Nathan-Turner felt was lacking, especially when The 4th Doctor was as aloof and unconnectable as he was (and only getting more and more so as time went on), the first incarnation of Romana had proved as cold and unrelatable as she was, and the wonderful sidekick of the Tin Dog could only ever be a silly robot (and thusly not relatable). Lalla Ward's Romana definitely helped the situation by bringing levity, but in Nathan-Turner's eyes the fact that The Doctor (a Time Lord) was stuck sticking around with a robot dog and another Time Lord only made the show less connectable and personal...

Audio After securing Tom Baker’s services and deciding to produce a series that recreates the feel of his 70s adventures, the next logical step for Big Finish is to turn a couple of unused story ideas from back then into full blown adventures for their Lost Stories line. The first in this new box set, The Foe from the Future was originally suggested by the legendary Roberts Banks Stewart (of The Seeds of Doom and Terror of the Zygons fame) for the slot in season fourteen eventually taken by The Talons of Weng-Chiang and has here been fleshed out by regular audio writer John Dorney. At six episodes, it’s one of the longest continuous stories Big Finish have produced and I’m pleased to say never drags. In fact, it’s positively bursting with adventures (and they can put that on the poster).

One of the tricks as Banks Stewart memorably employed in Seeds is to split the story into two rough sections. The first is a villiage mystery reminiscent of The Android Invasion or The Awakening. The Doctor and Leela investigate time trouble in the sleepy Devonshire village of Staffham in 1977 where Jalnik, the shadowy master of the local Grange is apparently conjuring ghosts. But when the geography of the village also begins to change before their eyes, they realise that something rather more powerful is at work which propels them along with a girl called Charlotte from the village into a far more futuristic setting where it becomes apparent the whole of galactic history is at stake. Big Finish’s own synopsis isn’t particularly specific on how that might be, so it would be unfair to reveal too much.

The Daily P.O.P. – Seeds of Doom set rumored

An extraordinary discovery is made near an isolated base in Antarctica. A seed pod dating back some 20,000 years. UNIT catches word and sends their scientific adviser to investigate. The power mad eccentric collector Gabriel Chase also learns of the find and sends two of his best operatives to retrieve the pod and kill all witnesses.

After arriving, the Doctor recognizes the pod as extraterrestrial, a Krynoid in a state of gestation. He is too late to stop the infection of one of the members of the crew who rapidly begins to transform from animal to vegetable matter. With the destruction of the base, crew and creature, Gabriel Chase believed that he had succeeded in snatching a one of a kind artifact. The Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith narrowly escape the devastation only to face further danger at the hands of Chase’s thugs and of course a massive plant monster, a Krynoid creature so massive that it defies the attacks of UNIT forces.
Directed by Douglas Camfield and written by Robert Banks Stewart, Seeds of Doom is a classic of the Hinchcliff era, combining tropes from popular horror films and featuring memorably evil characters such as the devious Gabriel Chase. In addition to an excellent cast, superb script and dynamic direction, Seeds of Doom also has an astounding score courtesy of Geoffrey Burgon (who also contributed the spine-tingling music in Terror of the Zygons).

Character Options is apparently releasing an action figure set based on this story with a re-release of the 11 Doctors set version of the Fourth Doctor and a re-painted Axon. That particular figure will have come full circle as it was initially intended to be a Krynoid figure and was instead painted in red hues and released as an Axon in true form.

Accessories will include a cutlass and a pair of Krynoid seed pods.

Images have circulated from Australia, but there has been no official word as of yet.

Preview: Revisitations 3 - The Robots of Death

As there is so much material on the Revisitations 3 box set (featuring three stories on five discs), I've split the review into their respective parts - with each focusing on the separate tales. You can read full details about the box set HERE but, first up, the Tom Baker 1977 outing, The Robots of Death.

STORY

There are very few perfect, and I mean literally, perfect Doctor Who stories. Even with the best there's usually a Skarasen or Magma monster to slightly mess up the production. But here is a bona fide perfect tale. (Not the best, I'm saying.) Anyway, there's little point in actually reviewing it as, no doubt, you've seen it and probably own it on DVD already - it's the extras you're interested in. But, suffice to say this is a genuine classic in the Whoeuvre

EXTRAS

The original DVD release, incredibly almost 12 years ago (actual gasps), didn't serve the perfection of the story that well - they had the cheek to list "Graphical Menus" as a Special Feature. (Ah, were we so simple in 2000?) So, thankfully, The Robots of Death has been given the VAM it deserves; and a suitably wonderful array of extras at that.

The main documentary, The Sandmine Murders, is your expected behind~the~scenes look at the story with contributions from the cast and crew. It's fact~packed and features great turns from Tommy B, Louise Jamieson, Philip Hinchfliffe, Michael Bryant, David Collings and Brian Croucher. Highlights include Baker being almost chaste about his on~set behaviour and Croucher calling his leading actor a "creative terrorist." As always, it's a fascinating watch with fantastic subjects, and cut together with style.

Q: How did the role of Rhys come about?
A: It was 4/5 years ago now! My agent rang up saying there’s an audition coming up for a new season in Wales, a spin off of Doctor Who and my agent put the feelers out and I went for a meeting with the casting director and I got in through an audition, read for the part and they offered me the part of Rhys and we began filming two weeks later. So as normal: acting jobs come along, you have to audition for them and some you don’t get, some you do!

Q: Are you happy the way Rhys has developed over the years? How he’s gone from A (being the husband at home,) to B (being part of the team in some respects)?
A: I am actually. I’ve got to be honest I really am. I love the development. I love the way he didn’t know anything about it in the first season to finding out about it in the second season. He’s really gone from strength to strength really. And his journey has been really great and I’m proud to still be alive and I’m really pleased he’s still there. I also love the fact he’s there now developed with the wife and the baby. It’s great! It’s great to play, works well dramatically, emotionally. Yeah- really great.

Q: What’s it like to act the relationship between Gwen and Rhys? We learnt that it was originally meant to end in S1 with Rhys dying. Are you glad it’s carried on?
A: Oh yeah! Totally! I love the relationship. I think Gwen loves him more than ever and her past is in the past now and they’re solid together through Anwen. Gwen will still be Torchwood everyday. She’ll still run off with Captain Jack to save the world but I think she would always come back to him. Rhys is a rock: he pillow, her shoulder to cry on. He’ll always be there for her you know, and I love acting with her. I love the fantasy element of it but I also love just nice intimate scenes with Eve and myself in the house.

Review: The Rocket Men written by John Dorney and directed by Lisa Bowerman

What’s it about: The TARDIS has landed on Platform Five, a floating city in the sky of the planet Jobis, and for a time the Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki get the chance to enjoy this idyllic place. And then the Rocket Men arrive, led by the sadistic Ashman. When the only other option to certain death is suicide, Ian Chesterton takes the gamble of his life

Schoolteachers in Love: Finally, marvellously, somebody has written the tale where Ian confesses his love for Barbara. Its an entirely original concept because the books touched upon the subject several times (notably in David A. McIntee’s The Eleventh Tiger and Simon Guerrier’s The Time Travellers – both excellent books so check them out) but there is something spellbinding about William Russell actually saying the words that makes it less than a possibility and more of a certainty. They were our guides through the first two wonderful years of Doctor Who and it was glorious to watch these friends go from scared, unwilling adventurers to falling in love with both the lifestyle and each other. Its around The Rescue/The Romans where its clear that the two teachers are more involved with each other than they were before, particularly the latter story as they lounge about in Roman apparel, blissed out on wine, playing jokes and flirting madly. By the time they leave the Doctor of course they leave together, seduced by the idea of going home, having a rest and being together. As we see them larking about in London and embracing each other in their last shot there is no doubt in my mind that these two went on to enjoy a fantastic marriage and life together. Massive kudos to John Dorney for taking the idea of the two of them in love and bringing it to life so vividly in his story. This is the point where Ian realises that he has strong feelings for Barbara and as is typical to human nature it only dawns upon him when he might lose her forever…

Eve Myles On The Future Of Torchwood

In a new interview with CultBox, the actress seems to be contemplating the end of Torchwood

Torchwood star Eve Myles would like to see a definitive end to the Torchwood saga, she reveals in an interview with CultBox.
“Nothing’s going to happen in 2012, I know that much for sure,” she says. “But who knows what will happen in 2013? Maybe a movie, to kinda draw a line under it? [The fans] deserve Torchwood to go ahead with something else to draw a line under it… for the fans to have a bit of closure.”
She goes on to say that she’d like the series to end where it began: “I think it’d be nice to be back in Wales. That’s where it was born and maybe it’d be nice to end it there.”
Maybe this is something we should follow up with her on stage at the Weekender next week…?

The Morbius Build Diary Part IV: The BODY of Morbius!

So onward to part IV of the build. After completing the bulk of the foam build of body parts, Paul and I decided to do a little pre-work on the pincer, clamp or the fierce CLAW of Morbius.

Like the other body parts, we looked over pics, took a comparative glance at the action figure and drew up a pattern for both the largers and smaller sides. The tracing and foam portion would have to wait til we temporarily re-located our area of construction.

It’s November 22nd, 1980. Blondie remains at number one with “The Tide is High.” A week later ABBA take over the spot with “Super Trouper,” their last number one hit on the UK charts. It remains at number one for the remainder of the story. The Police, The Boomtown Rats, Kool and the Gang, UB40, and John Lennon also chart. Meanwhile, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash, and Devo lurk about in the lower portions of the charts, the latter with “Whip It,” which peaks in the 50s, which is probably considerably lower than people would guess if pressed.

In real news, we should probably start with the murder of John Lennon, which, a week later, causes his then declining single “(Just Like) Starting Over” to suddenly jump from 22nd to number one and prompting a hurried rerelease of “Imagine.” Because for an anti-capitalist pacifist legend John Lennon and Yoko Ono were nothing if not shrewd businesspeople. A massive earthquake kills nearly 5000 in southern Italy. And Jean Donovan, and American missionary, is murdered in El Salvador along with three Catholic nuns. Her singles, of which there are none, do not chart as a result.

While on television, it’s 1977. Those who enjoy the ways in which the musical charts and Doctor Who oddly parallel will be bemused that 1977 was by most standards the peak of ABBA’s popularity, and that the last time ABBA was at number one was during The Invasion of Time, the last story of the season that was meant to begin with The Vampire Mutations by Terrance Dicks. Unfortunately the BBC was busy doing a high-profile adaptation of Dracula at the time and Head of Drama Graeme MacDonald commenced the first of a long series of butting heads with Graham Williams and ordered the script spiked for fear that Doctor Who would be seen as “sending up” the BBC’s more serious adaptation. It was replaced by Horror of Fang Rock.

Nicolas Winding Refn might have directed one of the most acclaimed films of 2011. But he still couldn't get a job directing Doctor Who...

Much of the chatter surrounding the movie Drive this week has been its sadly predictable snubbing in the Oscar nominations. Whilst lesser films are getting their day out in posh clothes, a film that’s topped many, many people’s best of 2011 lists (including ours) has been all but ignored.

No matter: you suspect Drive will live on a lot longer than Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close. But in the midst of the furore this week, a new interview with Drive director Nicholas Winding Refn has appeared. And in it, he’s got a rather surprising Doctor Who fact.

Chatting to Shortlist magazine, the director revealed that “I would have loved to direct Doctor Who but they didn’t want me — they turned me down last year. Maybe if they revive Blake’s 7 I could do that. I love it. It’s great. That could be fun to update.”

Blimey.

Might we have had Ryan Gosling as the Doctor crushing the head of a Dalek? It’s another one of those things that was clearly never meant to be.

Whosday: Thoughts on "Worlds in Time"

With Doctor Who: Worlds in Time available to play at last, how could I resist the urge to check it out? According to the website, it’s still only in preview stages, but that shouldn’t stop other Whovians from taking a look as well. It has some fun puzzle mechanics, is set to have lots of baddies and locales from the show, and it’s Doctor Who. If that’s not enough for you, it happens to be free and browser based; you don’t even have to install anything! Still not convinced? Maybe my take on the game so far will help you decide.

Basic Plot

In Worlds in Time, the Doctor finds himself in a bit of a pickle. Time is unraveling, and he can’t repair it on his own. He lands the TARDIS on Earth to look for someone to lend him a hand. This is where the player comes in. Somehow, the police box ends up in your living room, and the Doctor invites you to come aboard. After a quick bit of character creation you’re off on a grand adventure…in your jammies. The Doctor hands you a gadget and sends you off to investigate.

Time is unraveling? Not good, not good!

Oh good, there you are. Ready to save the universe?

Character Creation

You can play as a male or a female, and you can choose from one of four species: Human, Catkind, Silurian, or Tree of Cheem. I went with a human this time around, but if I ever make a new character I’ll be going Silurian. Some of those horn customizations are pretty sweet. Overall, I like the character creation system. It’s simple and short: name your character, pick a species, adjust coloring, and choose facial features from a set list. Pick a name you don’t mind letting anyone else playing the game see, though: it’s the name that will appear above your head in hub areas.

MinigamesStory progression, character leveling, and opportunities for upgrades are achieved through minigames. There’s a different type of puzzle for each interaction you can have with the world. So far, I’ve encountered three:

Defeating enemies: pairs of colored orbs drop down, Tetris-style, and you must match up the glowing orbs with the correct plain ones to clear the screen.

Clear orbs, kill autons. Questions?

Barricading doors: place bits of random junk to complete as many full horizontal lines as you can. Enemies constantly break your barricades, so you must constantly place more junk until the threat disappears.

Back off, autons, or I'll throw a suitcase at you!

Lockpicking: This is the strangest lockpicking minigame I’ve ever seen. In its defense, it does involve a sonic gadget, so naturally it is a little different. You have to shoot colored pieces at the lock, which also contains colored pieces. Match the colors to create sets of three or more pieces, and the tumblers start to fall away. This one is actually the most annoying of the three for me. I find it difficult to tell where the pieces will end up even though the gadget is supposed to be a pointer. This isn’t necessarily that bad, unless the level you’re playing is timed, and every shot counts.

Time to get rid of some red ones...

The Sonic Screwdri–Er, GadgetWhen the Doctor gives you your gadget, it looks a bit like a Playstation Move controller (at least, mine did). You can, however, upgrade it as you play. Completing missions and collecting time shards earn you chronons and energy. You can spend these on powers for your gadget, clothing for your character, or furnishings for your room in the TARDIS. If you customize your gadget with upgrades, it will start to look more like a sonic screwdriver. You can build charge and power upgrades which, when attached to the gadget, help you play the minigames. I have a couple of powers, but I have yet to use them. Hopefully they’ll become more relevant as the game goes on.

Assistants or Other Players: You Decide

When you log in, your character appears in a hub area. From here, you can choose to team up with fellow players for missions or go home to the TARDIS. If you choose to go to the TARDIS, you can still take missions, but you’ll be sent with several random assistants. This is nice for folks who just want to play the game and don’t want to worry with other people. I’m glad that Worlds in Time provides this choice. I haven’t teamed up with anyone yet, but it might make things a little easier. The assistants normally need to be directed to specific tasks, or they’ll just stand around and smile.

Other Random Thoughts

It struck me while playing that the player is doing the grunt work for the Doctor. You get sent out to collect time shards to help him save the universe while he stays in the TARDIS. (I assume he’s trying to fix her.) I hope the Doctor takes an active role in some of the missions.
It’s a little cruel of them to start you off without so much as a pair of slippers. Most companions at least have the sense to wear shoes, right?
When I saw the option to “buy chronons” I thought, “Oh, no, I’ll never be able to clothe my character properly because I won’t buy anything.” This worry was quickly negated when I got a pair of shoes from a time shard. Do more missions and collect the shards. You’ll get plenty of freebies for clothing and furnishings, plus enough chronons to buy upgrades.

Did I mention you get your own room in the TARDIS? It starts off a bit sparsely furnished, but as you collect things in the game you can furnish it however you want.

It's my room! And look, I even got better clothes so I don't have to run around fighting autons in my PJ's.

Conclusion

I only have a few nitpicky issues with this game. The puzzle minigames aren’t exactly earth-shattering, and I wish the Doctor would show up more. Also, I would like to know if there’s a way to become “friends” with people in game so you can team up with them on a regular basis. I think I’d be more interested if I could get my Whovian friends to play with me.

Overall, I’ve enjoyed Worlds in Time, and I’ll probably continue playing off and on. If you’re a Whovian and/or like Flash games, check it out, but don’t expect too much. If I pick it up again, it will be for the fun of having a room in the TARDIS, fighting Doctor Who monsters, and visiting locations from the series.

For the final series release of The Sarah Jane Adventures, fans have been treated to a documentary - a first for the DVD range of the Doctor Who spin~off series. Goodbye Bannerman Road: Remembering Elisabeth Sladen is a twenty~minute tribute to the late actress featuring Daniel Anthony (who played Clyde Langer), Anjli Mohindra (Rani Chandra), Gary Russell (Script Editor) and Matt Smith (The Eleventh Doctor). Even as the film starts, the mood is incredibly emotional with newly shot footage of Sarah Jane's house as it stands today accompanied by a moving soundtrack. Daniel and Anjli are interviewed outside their old stomping~ground and it's clear from their stories that Lis meant a great deal to them; and still does. The former refers to the actress as a "lovable headmistress" though, interestingly, goes on to discuss her insecurities.....

The Doctor Who Experience is preparing for its final week in London this February half term, and to make sure it goes out with a bang, a whole host of additional activities are planned to thrill visitors for the last time in London, before the exhibition moves to Cardiff in the summer.

Saturday 11th February sees the return ofDoctor Who choreographer Alisa Berkwho will be giving visitors a chance to perfect their monster moves with special lessons on how to walk like a Judoon Trooper or a Cyberman.

Monday 13th February, the team from Millennium FX share their behind-the-scenes knowledge on the inspiration behind some of the show’s iconic characters, with live design and sculpt demonstrations, as well as drawing demonstrations on the 17th February.

Wednesday 15th February, visitors have the rare opportunity to come face-to-face with the Doctor’s terrifying adversaries, the Cybermen and the telepathic Ood.

Thursday 16th February you can become your favourite monster, as Doctor Who makeup technicians will be ready to transform you into your choice of a Silurian, Cyberman, Clockwork Droid or Weeping Angel.

The show comes to a close on Wednesday 22nd February where fans get the chance to bid a final farewell to the Doctor and some of the most recent monsters from the series, before its big move to Cardiff. So if you want to have Ood-les of fun this February half term, visit The Doctor Who Experience at London’s Olympia by the 22nd!

The Doctor Who Experience allows visitors to join the Doctor on a journey through time and space, encountering some of the best-loved and scariest monsters from the hit international, television series. Matt Smith has left us speculating yet again about his Doctor Who future, after comments made backstage at last night's National Television Awards, at which he scooped the best drama performance (male) for the show.
Smith denied that the imminent departure of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill - companions Amy and Rory - would have a bearing on how long he continued as the Doctor, but in the same breath spoke about being on Doctor Who “for a very small period of time."
“I always knew Karen and I would have different journeys,” he said. “I'm sad [about their departures] because I enjoy working with Karen and Arthur. But this show is bigger than all of us actors... and will continue far longer, and have a life way after me. I'm here for a very small period of time.”
A possible hint that his own departure is not far off? Not necessarily. Smith continued in the same breath, “I'm here for the future, I love making the show. I have no plans to leave.”
Phew, right? But wait. Isn't he keen on pursuing a movie career? Any luck in Hollywood yet, Matt?
“No, sadly not,” said Smith, looking genuinely sad. “The truth is that I've got another year left... I've got a year of Who and I'll take it from there…”
Gulp... Certainly, there was no disguising his ambition to break into the movies: “I'm absolutely interested in films," he said. "I've always loved films, I've always loved the idea and the process of films and I'm actually really interested in directing.”
So what is going on? Smith's various statements don’t necessarily contradict one another. We know he's currently signed up for just one more year of Who. He’s also interested in making movies. So while he may have no concrete plans to leave Doctor Who, neither has he made any commitment to continue, and if the right role came along...
It’s worth remembering, too, that 2013 is Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary and that earlier this month Steven Moffat told Radio Times: “There will never be a better time to be a Doctor Who fan.”

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan have won National Television Awards for their roles in Doctor Who.

The press may have claimed - not entirely accurately - that ratings for the sixth season of Doctor Who were in decline but it seems the fans were satisfied with and the performances of lead actors Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. The two have picked up awards at this year’s National Television Awards.

Karen Gillan was picked up the actress award beating Torchwood’s Eve Myles, Waterloo Road actress Jaye Jacobs - formerly of Holby City - and Scott & Bailey actress Suranne Jones who cropped up this year in Doctor Who in the episode The Doctor’s Wife. Matt Smith meanwhile picked up the award for the Male Drama Performance. Smith also saw off competition from Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood as John Barrowman was also nominated. Smith also beat Martin Clunes and Shameless actor David Threlfall.

Timelords-in-training won't need a Sonic Screwdriver to crack open this adorable TARDIS safe -- instead it's unlocked using a smart phone. We've gone paws-on with the Zeon Tech TARDIS Smartsafe at the Toy Fair in London, so hit play on the video above to examine it for yourself.
Here's how it works. Once your secret items have been squirrelled away inside -- no doubt you'll be able to store a surprisingly large amount of stuff -- you shut the door and the safe locks itself.
Next, install a companion app (never has the phrase been more appropriate) on your iPhone or Android device, stick your phone into the slot atop the safe, and use the app to set a four-digit passcode.
To unlock the Smartsafe, put your phone in the same slot and key in your code. Press enter and the door pops open. Dead easy.
It might be simple to operate, but the tech employed here is actually very clever. Rather than connecting your phone to the safe using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or a docking station, inside that slot at the top there's a tiny sensor.
When you key in a passcode on your mobile, an area at the bottom of the phone's screen flashes a pattern of lights. The sensor detects those flashes and can tell by reading them whether you've got the right code. Nifty.
The safe itself is lovingly rendered, with a flashing light on top and all the necessary vwoooo-vwoooo sound effects, but it doesn't look all that tough, so while it should keep prying sisters away from your most precious Hot Wheels, it's probably best not to store the family silver inside.

Set to hit retail in time for the new series over the 2012 festive season, the Doctor Who AppGear blaster comes with a plastic Cyberman gun which cradles a smartphone and turns it into a digital rifle scope. The Doc's enemies then appear and a user shoots them down. Fun stuff, WowWee.

The game is very similar to other titles in the range such as EliteCommanderAR, which uses a different weapon and features a fresh batch of baddies.

Doctor Who -Who's He? has Show 45 - With one hundred tin soldiers. It's audio commentary time again! This week, the lads bring part you the second part of their commentary for The Invasion Parts 5 to 8. This time, they run out steam as Tony was all facted out and Phil resorts to making sexist remarks about women of the sixties (and tries to justify it) whilst Paul keeps a dignified silence. Tony also does something that makes Phil swear which results in the use of a 'beep', the first in the history of this podcast.

Dirty WHOers Podcast has Episode 39 & 39a. And low it came to pass, in a flurry of (almost) compitant podcasting activity, we did take a shufty at 'Dalek' from Christopher Eccleston's much under-rated tennure as the Doctor back in 2005 and an interview with writer Rob Sherman about his 'Dalek' episode, and discussing the new series.

Season 18 of Doctor Who is something of a strange beast if for no other reason than because it marks a period of transition for the show. Most transitory periods only last a few or so episodes (the transition from Pertwee to Tom Baker is a good example, where "Robot" is a weird UNIT story and not really the Hinchcliffe/Holmes vision of the show), but this season marks a big paradigm shift as the show prepares to move away from Tom Baker and towards the stewardship of Producer John Nathan-Turner....

The tenure of the First Doctor is noteworthy, of course, for introducing the character and his means of conveyance, as well as two of his most persistent and popular foes, the Daleks and the Cybermen. It also provided a set of villains who were regrettably seen again rarely, if ever. One of these was the Celestial Toymaker....

Desperately trying to free the Tardis before it breaks itself apart, the Doctor is successful, then lands on Earth to learn there is a 'time corridor' connecting Earth and some place in the future. While investigating an old warehouse, they meet Stein, a man stuttering and nearly crippled with fear. Turns out he's a trooper from the future, escaping the Daleks....

As Miles and Wood point out at great length, this is completely insane from any rational perspective. It's one of the most non-sensical time loops ever in the series....

There is a character who is clearly based on J.R. Tolkien, a humourless academic who has written a vast epic about elves and goblins. The central premise of the plot is that the timeline has been altered so that the epic is now about talking poodles (who are in fact real)....

As some of you may know, Paul is the current owner of the Doctor Who TARDIS Console as seen in the 1996 Fox TV Movie and used on-screen by both Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann. It's a fabulous looking prop and still in fairly good shape. The electronics were still in working order and a number of the switches and knobs were intact. Paul himself had already built a replica of the central column or time rotor to complete it as the console did not include this when he purchased it about 6 years ago...."

Every Doctor Who Story 1963-2011 - A Babelcolour Tribute

An updated and expanded version of my 2008 video, detailing every Doctor Who adventure from 'An Unearthly Child' in 1963 right up to 'The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe' Christmas Special. But remember, there are still 106 episodes missing from the BBC archives.

The re-coloured clip of 'The Mind of Evil' is one of several from the UNIT documentary on the 'Day of the Daleks' DVD. Clips from other missing serials have come from a variety of different sources. I have hand-colourised the 'Ambassadors of Death' trailer clip especially for this video tribute.

The numbering is a personal issue. I consulted with Wikipedia when compiling the tribute but I disagreed with some of the decisions made by the people who contributed to the page. 'A Good Man Goes To War' is not, in my opinion, part of a two-episode story with 'Let's Kill Hitler'. The storyline, locations, guest artists and directors are all different. Similarly, I consider 'Utopia' to be a single episode, with a suffiently different plot (an a different director) to the 2-part 'Sound of Drums'/'Last of the Time Lords'. Other fans are bound to be in uproar, but it all comes down to personal opinion. All I can suggest to those who disagree is... go make your own tribute!

Only 11 months to go until the show's 50th Glorious Year! Enjoy!

According to a detailed search of UK records performed by Gwen Cooper's police colleague, Yvonne, he was never heard from again. (TW: Everything Changes) The evening of the 20th/21st January 1941 was therefore the time when "Captain Jack" began travelling in the TARDIS with the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler.

Big Finish has Magnus Greel Revealed! Recording is underway on Doctor Who: The Butcher of Brisbane by Marc Platt, in which the Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and Nyssa take on Magnus Greel in a prequel to The Talons of Weng-Chiang. “Casting the role of Magnus Greel wasn’t easy,” says producer David Richardson, “but I’ve been hoping for a long time to bring in Angus Wright for a role – his voicereel is magnificent! Thankfully the dates worked out and, as I write this, Angus is in the booths recording his face-off with the Fifth Doctor.” Angus is perhaps best known to Doctor Who fans for playing Mr Dread in The Sarah Jane Adventures story The Vault of Secrets, and he can also be seen in cinemas as John Nott in The Iron Lady. His stage work includes the acclaimed War Horse, and he portrayed Shylock for the RSC in The Merchant of Venice. The Butcher of Brisbane is released in June.
