Torchwood - Web of Lies - Episode 1 (Holly and Gwen)

Players participate in a parallel narrative to the "Torchwood: Miracle Day" that delves deeper into the dramatic events which unfold in the TV series. "Torchwood: Web of Lies" includes lead characters Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper – voiced by John Barrowman and Eve Myles – AND introduces Eliza Dushku as the voice of Holly, a young woman intent on finding out what has happened to her brother and the world.

Immerse yourself in the exciting world of Torchwood like never before as you crack codes, break locks and race across landscapes in search of the real truth behind Miracle Day.

What happened to Jack and Gwen on that "missing day" back in 2007 - the day that neither remembers? Is it possible that a young, paranoid conspiracy theorist actually stumbled into the chilling truth and what it means for Miracle Day? The ONLY place to find out is in "Torchwood: Web of Lies."

Torchwood: Web of Lies is written by HUGO award winner Jane Espenson and Ryan Scott and Executive Produced by Russell T Davies.

He doesn't die, but he is silenced, and his survivors are left only with cryptic clues he left behind. His sister Holly and friend Nick team up to decipher the clues and find out what Miles knew about a mysterious "Key," one of the secrets of Miracle Day.

During the frantic search for the Key, Holly, a cancer survivor, is faced with new enemies, betrayals, and mysterious references to something called "Torchwood." By the time she uncovers the Key, she's learned something about it that may change her mind about everything, including the Miracle itself.

BBC Doctor Who - Script to Screen: Winners Announced!

Matt Smith as the Doctor
The wait is over! The winners of the BBC Learning and Doctor Who Confidential Script to Screen competition have been announced!

Prior to the winners being selected, Doctor Who Confidential visited one school to find out what the competition meant to them... You can see what they find out in this video.

And for full details about the winners and to find out what happens next, check out the press release below:A school from Basingstoke is celebrating after winning a competition to write a Doctor Who mini-adventure that will star Matt Smith and be shown on the BBC in the Autumn.

This once in a lifetime opportunity will see pupils from Oakley CE Junior School travelling to the BBC Studios in Cardiff this weekend (July 8/9th) where their script will be brought to life by the Doctor Who team and cast, including Matt Smith.

The BBC Learning and Doctor Who Confidential Script to Screen competition was aimed at Upper Primary school pupils and involved them writing a three minute script that takes the resident Time Lord on a new quest travelling through space and time inside the TARDIS.

Year 6 teacher Kevin Downing, from Oakley Junior School, said the pupils involved in the project are over the moon at winning. He said: "I told all the upper school children about the Doctor Who competition in assembly and asked them to come up with a good plot in groups of two to four. Daniel, Katie, Adam and Ben told me their idea one break time and I knew straight away that it had potential, as it was original, humorous and mysterious.

"The children then spent about three hours over a number of weeks writing the script. Being Doctor Who fans, they had great fun deliberating over how the Doctor would react to things, what he would say and imagining how it would look on screen. None of us ever imagined the school would win the competition of course, but it was exciting to have entered and have the finished script to look back on in years to come. Getting the call to say the pupils were on the shortlist of ten was an unbelievable moment - the thought that Steven Moffat himself would be reading their script! As for winning, it will be the experience of a lifetime and one we'll never forget."

Details of the school's script are a closely guarded secret but includes a well known historical figure and a fez!

Doctor Who Confidential will record behind the scenes to show how Oakley Junior School's script gets developed from paper to television screen - from the first script meeting, a cast read-through, on set filming all the way to the final edit. These will be shown on Doctor Who Confidential on BBC Three later in the year.

The competition encouraged children to be as creative and imaginative as possible to put together a story filled with all the excitement and adventure of the popular BBC One sci-fi drama. The action packed script had to feature Matt Smith and could include one of four fearsome monsters from the show: Ood, Judoon, Cyberman, or Weeping Angel, as well as a brand new human character to test the wits of the Doctor.

Lesson plans, a storyboard and a sample script were just a few of the tailored Primary resources available on the BBC Learning website to help guide teachers and pupils through the process.

Steven Moffat, Head Writer at Doctor Who, said: "I loved the shortlisted scripts, there was so much skill and enthusiasm on display that it was actually genuinely, very, very difficult to judge. There was some really, really skilled writing, it was very exiting how they caught the voice of the Doctor and how they used the always stringent limitations of Doctor Who to their advantage, very exciting.

"I come from a family of teachers, I was a teacher, my father's a teacher, my sister's a teacher. We go back teacher generations so it's hard wired for me to want the approval of teachers so I'm very, very thrilled that its gone down so well with the schools that took part."

The winning script was chosen by Steven Moffat; Controller of BBC Learning, Saul Nassé; Piers Wenger and Beth Willis, Executive Producers of Doctor Who.

Controller of BBC Learning, Saul Nassé, said: "We've been delighted by the response from schools to the competition. We really wanted to motivate children to learn new writing skills and create the next generation of storytellers. Schools have really engaged in the competition and the standard of the writing has shown us that there is a wealth of talent out there which we have been able to tap into and hopefully encourage in the future. It's a great example of a really popular BBC show inspiring people do something truly educational."

Review's Roundup...

Tea with Morbius has Eye of the Scorpion, by Ian McLaughlin (Big Finish Audio), Ancient Egypt is an historical setting that has not been used terribly often in Doctor Who, so it is rather nice to have the place in this audio. Ian McLaughlin has given us a pretty interesting plot regarding the historically unrecorded Pharaoh Erimem, so it would have been nice for this to have been done as a pure historical. Unfortunately, he took the easy way out and gave us an additional plot about alien parasites that does not feel terribly original.....

BBC Press Office - Torchwood press pack - introduction

BBC Press Office
The highly anticipated series of Torchwood: Miracle Day, starring John Barrowman and Eve Myles, starts on Thursday 14 July on BBC One. The new series created by Russell T Davies welcomes Mekhi Phifer, Bill Pullman and Alexa Havins, plus recurring guest stars Arlene Tur and Lauren Ambrose.

One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep aging - they get hurt and sick – but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight.

With all the extra people, resources are finite. It's said that in four months' time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can't be a natural event – someone's got to be behind it. It's a race against time as CIA. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking "What is Torchwood?" he's drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human, forever.

Torchwood: Miracle Day is produced by BBC Worldwide Productions for BBC Cymru Wales, Starz and BBC Worldwide.

Beth Willis leaves Doctor Who

Amplify’d from www.doctorwhonews.net
Doctor Who executive producer Beth Willis, is to leave the series to return to her former employers Kudos Film and Television.

Willis will leave the BBC at the end of this month, a couple of months before fellow executive producer Piers Wenger leaves the BBC to join Film 4.

The news means a new executive team will join showrunner Steven Moffat as the programme gears up for production on the 2012/2013 series of the show leading into the 50th anniversary year.

Willis has been an Executive Producer on the series for the past two years. She joined the series with Wenger at the same time as showrunner Steven Moffat, taking over for the arrival of Eleventh Doctor at the conclusion of The End of Time. Both have been responsible for 27 episodes of the Show.

Wills will leave the series at the end of this month with Wenger departing the BBC at the end of September. The BBC hopes to find a replacement for Willis in time for the filming of the Doctor Who Christmas special. It will then recruit a second executive producer before filming for the 33rd series begins.

The BBC's Drama controller Ben Stephenson praised Willis for her work on Doctor Who.

Much of its current success is down to her vision and ambition for the show. She has been an inspiring and instrumental force and I know will be much missed by all of us, and especially Matt Smith and Steven Moffat.

Steven Moffat added:
We couldn’t keep her forever, though God knows I tried. She is off to be brave and brilliant in brand new ways, and the sad news for Doctor Who is that it will be somewhere else.

Willis returns to Kudos where she produced the first two series of Ashes To Ashes. Chief executive of Kudos, Jane Featherstone, said
“I’m chuffed to bits to be welcoming her back to Kudos, where her creative instincts and no-nonsense work ethic will make her a force to be reckoned with in the drama world.

Radio Times - Cucumber: Russell T Davies American show confirmed

Amplify’d from beta.radiotimes.com
A pilot for a new show scripted by Russell T Davies is in development in the US, RadioTimes.com can confirm.

Entitled Cucumber, the show is a collaboration between BBC Worldwide Productions and US cable network Showtime, for which Davies previously adapted his Channel 4 series Queer as Folk.

A spokesperson for BBC Worldwide Productions confirmed that the project is currently in development in Los Angeles, but declined to comment further.

However, it is understood that the show will centre around the lives of a group of gay men, as did Queer as Folk.

Meanwhile, fans of Davies can see the former Doctor Who showrunner's latest foray into the Whoniverse, Torchwood: Miracle Day - also a US co-production - on BBC1 starting next week (9:00pm, Thursday 14 July).

Den of Geek - A celebration of Jon Pertwee

Amplify’d from www.denofgeek.com
Jon Pertwee

Jon Pertwee (aka 'The Tall Lightbulb', Worzel Gummidge, and 'The Pert One') played the Third Doctor as a hybrid of Jeeves and Wooster. The confidence bordering on arrogance, the fondness for the finer things, the frequenting of gentlemen's clubs (not that kind of gentlemen's club. Probably) and a keen sense of idealism are all traits he shares with Bertie Wooster.

His intelligence, ability to see a plan through, and inner steel are things that Wooster's butler also possesses. Plus, he likes yelling "Haii", mugging shamelessly and wearing ostentatious clothing. Thus was a TV legend born.

Pertwee's background was in comedy. Featuring in various films, he was most well known for starring in The Navy Lark for eighteen years, and Doctor Who was his big chance to break away from the perception the public had of him. As a result, the Third Doctor's character is not big on quips, but instead is a generally serious man, heavy on the charm. He doesn't deliver punchlines as such, but there's a lot of character-based comedy delivered straight.

Take his first meeting with Jo Grant, for example. There's a lot of funny dialogue in it, but the Doctor's not trying to make a joke. Rather he's just genuinely annoyed that this "ham-fisted bun vendor" is to be foisted upon him.

The Pertwee era featured two distinct tones and approaches to the show. His first season featured a scientist as a companion, and was fixed firmly on Earth after the game-changing events of The War Games. We now knew of Time Lords, still godlike and all-powerful, capable of forcing a new body onto the Doctor and placing him in exile. Instantly the series' main asset (the wealth of storytelling available via the TARDIS) is limited to stories set in present day Britain.

In Season 7, Doctor Who becomes Quatermass. The regular characters are not necessarily the Doctor's friends. Working for UNIT and being a named character is no guarantee of survival until the end of the story. (Also, the Pertwee era is the start of Doctor Who's long and noble tradition of killing off Geoffrey Palmer's character at the earliest opportunity.)

  • John Barrowman: 'I'd happily play Jack forever!' - What's on TV
"This is going to sound really cheesy, but I don't care. I didn't ever expect to be involved in Doctor Who and now Torchwood as someone with an American accent, but the fact that Captain Jack was embraced by the British public, and that I, as an openly gay man, play a huge action hero is absolutely one of the biggest gifts that could ever have been given to me. If someone said to me, 'John, you are only going to play Captain Jack Harkness for the rest of your life', I would be content"....

The confidence bordering on arrogance, the fondness for the finer things, the frequenting of gentlemen's clubs (not that kind of gentlemen's club. Probably) and a keen sense of idealism are all traits he shares with Bertie Wooster.....
