Sadly they lost their money and the Mirror is questionning what the right answer should have been. The choice of answer was given as Slyvester, Paul or David, the Society hopes to be quoted in tomorrow's Daily Mirror.

International BBC iPlayer to show Doctor Who with Adverts?

Telegraph
An international version of the iPlayer will be launched next year after receiving the approval of the BBC Trust.

John Smith, the chief executive of BBC Worldwide, the BBC's commercial wing, said it would open up the "under-exploited" market for UK shows, such as Doctor Who, he went on to say "Not only will that mean international fans of, for example, Doctor Who can get their fix legitimately [rather than downloading programmes illegally], but it has the potential of opening up a new revenue stream for the entire UK production industry, alongside sales to traditional broadcasters.

The move will mean that advertising could be introduced on to the iPlayer unless BBC Worldwide decides to charge viewers to use the service.

Executives have yet to decide which option will be introduced, but they said the Trust's decision will enable them to raise funds needed after the Government's decision to freeze the licence fee.

It is estimated that global audiences would pay up to $10 for an episode of its most popular shows.

The Daily P.O.P. has Doctor Who action figure review- The Monsters (part one), "I have noted this in my previous Doctor Who action figure reviews, but it bears repeating that the attention to detail is so stunning in these toys. Previously, the only miniatures available were lead figurines and a line of expensive and rather disappointing creations from Dapol. Those days are long past fans of the program, however, and we now have a wide array of incredible toys."

"Troughtonesque to Twilight" by Draculasaurus

Amplify’d from www.draculasaurus.com
It's hard to believe that it was less than a year ago, when fandom was getting it's first look at the Eleventh Doctor's costume. People were saying that Matt Smith was too young, too "emo" to be the Doctor. Set report pictures were sparking outbursts of both joy and apprehension.
I find it interesting that, in emotional times for fans, these set report pictures take on a sort of mystical importance.
It seems to capture a moment when our heroes were still strangers.

Dr Who and the Daleks "portal into outer space" draws record numbers to Life Science Centre

Amplify’d from www.culture24.org.uk
A photo of two robots in an exhibition
Newcastle’s Life Science Centre says its hosting of the BBC’s stratospherically popular travelling Doctor Who display has been the key to record annual visitor numbers.

Built as one of the government’s Millennium Commissions a decade ago, the Tyneside innovation headquarters celebrated ten years in the business with a total count of 125,000 punters as the exhibition closed last Sunday (October 31 2010).

“Doctor Who was often the spark which lit the science flame for many people,” says Chief Executive Linda Conlon, having started planning the show two years ago.

“That’s how they got interested in science, even if much of the viewing was from behind the couch in living rooms up and down the land.

“At least three generations can relate to the Doctor Who series and characters, and for many it opened a portal into the world of outer space and science generally. It's been a valuable educational training tool as well as a hugely popular cultural vehicle with cross-generational appeal.”

Day trippers from as far afield as Yorkshire, Cumbria and Scotland were enticed by the Daleks in a repeat of the success the colourful display enjoyed at venues such as Glasgow’s Kelvingrove.

Organisers are now planning a suitably promising follow-up in the form of an invention odyssey hosted by animated heroes Wallace and Gromit, which will open in May 2011.

Doctor Who's Matt Smith: 'I want to embrace the madness'

Amplify’d from www.telegraph.co.uk
Matt Smith in Doctor Who
By James Rampton

"Walking down the street to buy a pint of milk is now a very different experience from what it was two years ago,” says Matt Smith. “Nothing can really prepare you for such a dramatic change in your life.”

Earlier this year, the floppy-haired 28 year-old became the youngest actor ever cast in the lead role of TV phenomenon Doctor Who – the first series with Smith in the Tardis is released on DVD on Monday – and the experience has turned his world upside down. “People come up to me 50 times a day,” he says. “How do I deal with it? I wear a hoodie and a pair of shades and I keep my head down. But I knew what I was entering into. [Celebrity] is just part of the remit – and a small price to pay when you get to run around time and space every day!”

Previously best known for TV roles in Philip Pullman adaptation The Ruby in the Smoke and Party Animals, Smith says he is well aware of his responsibilities as an ambassador for one of the most potent and durable brands in British television. “People feel very affectionate towards the programme because it has such a heritage in our culture. When children come up and ask me, ‘What’s your favourite monster?’, you see how they’d be if the actual Doctor turned up in the Tardis on their doorstep, so I always try to be patient. If you’re 10 and Doctor Who seems impatient with you, that’s going to be rubbish.”

Smith’s Doctor – a performance which draws on elements of Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin and Inspector Clouseau – is very much his own creation: a high-energy, high-intelligence, yet borderline-unhinged character. “I really like the episode in the last series where the Doctor moves in with a landlord played by James Corden,” says Smith. In it the Doctor is trying to pass himself off as a regular lodger. “We see the Doctor behaving in a way which he believes to be normal but which is in fact bizarre. But we forgive him because he does it with such spirit and good grace. He’s not afraid to be himself – which is liberating and endearing. He’s never underhand – just a bit mad. I want to embrace the madness and push it further!”

As well as his appearances in Doctor Who, Smith will soon be seen starring in Womb, a futuristic new movie about a woman (played by former Bond girl Eva Green) who clones her dead husband (Smith). The actor also takes the lead in Christopher and His Kind, a new BBC Two drama about how during the 1930s the writer Christopher Isherwood fled the stifling effect of both English society and his mother for the more louche pleasures of Berlin.

- The DVD of Doctor Who – The Complete Series 5 is released on Monday. To buy a seven-CD audio collection of Doctor Who stories read by Matt Smith for £12.99 visit telegraph.co.uk/promotions

Tofu and Dr. Who (Or Geek Out With Your Curd Out)

Amplify’d from cadryskitchen.com

It’s hard to believe now that there was a time when I didn’t love tofu.  I still remember the first time that I saw it in a grocery store as a child.  Now it surprises me that it was even there in our tiny Hy-Vee in the middle of Iowa.  It seems like an unlikely place for packaged bean curd.  I remember asking my mom about it, examining the package, and wondering about the liquid that would press against its plastic encasement, reminiscent of a water balloon.  How could something floating in a box of water be palatable?  Even years later before I went vegan, when I would buy mozzarella in liquid, tofu still seemed unappetizing.  They’re pretty much the same thing in concept– one is a cheese made from cow’s milk with rennet as a common coagulant, and the other is a cheese made from soy milk with calcium carbonate as a common coagulant.  They’re water-based foods sold in liquid to keep their consistency.

Doctor Who: Step Back In Time - The Web of Fear

Amplify’d from www.youtube.com
This week's Step Back in Time features a clip from the Second Doctor adventure, The Web of Fear, which we present as a tribute to writer Mervyn Haisman who died last week.

For Doctor Who fans, Mervyn will be forever remembered for The Abominable Snowmen, The Web of Fear and The Dominators. He penned all three adventures with co-writer Henry Lincoln, with the first of these introducing the deadly robotic Yeti. The follow-up to that story, The Web of Fear, included the debut of Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, a character who returned many times after his promotion to the rank of Brigadier.

We've chosen this scene from The Web of Fear as it shows how Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln could create memorably spooky scenes, cranking up the tension and frights, even without the Doctor's presence! Mervyn Haisman also wrote for many other popular BBC dramas including The Onedin Line and Howard's Way. He was born in London, 1928 and died October, 2010.

The Night After Hallowe'en 3, SJA Best Moments, Davies & Gardner Exclusive Interview, Doctor Who Zombies, plus more News and Reviews

Editor: Bonfire night has come to the Newsrooms Paradox Island in Second Life, have a safe time with your firework parties tonight.

BBC Doctor Who has The Night After Hallowe'en: Part Three, by Mark B. Oliver, at least a dozen Guy Fawkes were upon the crowd, their cold expressionless masks further terrorizing the innocent revelers....

BBC Sarah Jane Adventures has Revealed: Best Moments, the Bannerman Road Gang discuss their favourite moments on set.

Collider.com has Executive Producer's Russell T. Davies & Julie Gardner Exclusive Interview, Russell T. Davies and executive producer Julie Gardner talked about their new partnership with Starz, giving the much-beloved series a more global feel, and how science fiction is the perfect means with which to examine the human race. They also hinted at some story ideas and new characters for Season 4, discussed the strength of their new writing staff and revealed that they hope to take the show to the San Diego Comic-Con for 2011.

SFX has Doctor Who Zombies, a few weeks ago, we tasked you with zombifying the Doctor and co. Here are a selection of the best pieces of art/clever Photoshoppery that you sent us!

Scotsman.com has Billy Connolly: How I was almost the Doctor, the Scots comedian has confirmed rumours that he was considered by producers to play the Time Lord in a 1996 television movie, a role that eventually went to Paul McGann.

Crafty Tardis has Photos from "Whoville", our spook house was a pretty good success, despite the weather.....

superrichi1a has posted in the TARDIS Builders Forum The Leadsworth build, "...I actually live in a village in the Midlands called Leadsworth, ironically, and what I'm trying to create is a bit of a pic n' mix of TARDIS design aspects."

Neil John Buchanan's Journal has The Teletubbie Terror, "it may dismay you to learn that I’ve brainwashed my children. I’m not proud, but it was a necessary evil. I’m a big fan of a certain british Time Lord and to ensure my continued uninterrupted pleasure in viewing his ongoing adventures I ensured both my daughters became avid fans as well...."

Rich's ComixBlog has...
  • Outrage of the Zygons - 19, Jem asks Mel if she can prove her claim to be a time travellor. Mel offers to show them the TARDIS and the Holograms accept.

The Bad Wilf podcast has Episode 13: Midnight Cawfee, Doctor Who is briefly discussed. Professor Dave and Imran announce their new podcast.

Behind the Sofa
has Isolation is not good for me....., Stuart Ian Burns gets lost in The Empty Planet, ...offers the same bracing images of peopleless streets familiar from the likes of 28 Days Later or the various versions of I Am Legend in which the mass of humanity is just gone and those of us who ironically like people but hate gatherings can fantasise about going to the cinema without being disturbed by the rest of the audience (once we’ve worked out how the projector works), break into the National Archive and see what’s really been covered up under the seventy-year rule and having the run of the expensive food isle in Waitrose.

The Tardis Project has "Galaxy 4" wrapup, the story itself, while fairly simple, is solid: the beautiful, but treacherous Maaga vs. the hideous, but noble Rill, with the Chumblies as a bit of (somewhat silly) robot fun.

The Edwardian Adventurer has 015 – The Singing Sands, “The old Doctor continually shows his disapproval of my action by being both difficult and bad-tempered. For three days now, during which time we have covered no more than thirty miles, I have had to endure his insults.”

SFX has DVD Review Doctor Who, series five, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue…” The old saying that becomes so important in season five’s final episode  could just as well serve as a mission statement for series five of new Who.

'Radio Times' 5-11 November 1966: Patrick Troughton's first appearance as 'Doctor Who' overshadowed by the Dalek

Amplify’d from www.bbc.co.uk
Front cover of the Radio Times for 5-11 November 1966, depicting daleks outside of a space rocket.

Patrick Troughton's debut appearance as the new Doctor Who goes almost unnoticed as the Daleks are the focus for 'Radio Times'. As this was the first time 'Doctor Who' had changed its lead actor, the emphasis for this edition of the magazine is very much business as usual. The half-page feature on page 3 reassures viewers that the serial is directed by the same man who brought the Daleks to the screen in their first adventure and that the metal monsters are, once again, voiced by Peter Hawkins. Patrick Troughton's debut is almost an aside.

To help maintain the mystery of this new Doctor's identity, fans had to wait six weeks for a more thorough introduction to Troughton in the pages of 'Radio Times'.
The reference in the article to Drahavians is a misremembered detail on the part of the author. The Drahvins battled the First Doctor in a 1965 adventure called 'Galaxy 4'.

Tardis for iPhone and iTouch by Neko-Kaolla

I've been on a Doctor Who kick lately, and decided to do this. Built it from the ground up, except the plaques on the doors (found those on Google). It was fun making the teeny-tiny keyhole and all the shading and stuff (I was playing with the Blending Options, really, but it was still so much fun).

Couldn't figure out which font to use for the top... so I had to play with that, too. Not too proud of how it came out there, but it was the closest I could figure out.

I opted out of giving the base some texture, just so I can keep it all stylized.Read more at neko-kaolla.deviantart.com

Listen as we struggle valiantly to maintain a thin veneer of calm while quizzing Mr Clayton Hickman on Sarah Jane, The Brilliant Book, his time at Doctor Who Magazine and anything else we think would be sensible and interesting to talk about.

Then continue to listen in horror whilst we get over excited and ask him to divulge secrets to Season 6 and which monster he would get intimate with to save the universe? All this and a telling off, a lost bet, a murder, tales from the wilderness years and an Elton John song about the dark side of fandom.

MTV.Com - Win 'Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series' On DVD Or Blu-Ray (And Other Great Stuff)!

Amplify’d from splashpage.mtv.com
Doctor Who

Okay, so if you've been reading the site for any significant amount of time, you already know that your friendly neighborhood Splash Page editor is a big fan of "Doctor Who." In fact, you'll probably argue that "big fan" is a terrible understatement. But let's not bicker over semantics here, folks — let's give you the chance to win some great "Doctor Who" stuff instead.

On November 9, Series 5 of BBC & BBC America's long-running science-fiction serial "Doctor Who" arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray, featuring Matt Smith's first full season as the Eleventh Doctor. And as luck would have it, we have a bunch of "Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series" DVDs, Blu-Rays, toys, and other great "Who"-friendly items to give away to some lucky readers.

We'll be giving all of this "Doctor Who" swag away periodically over the next few days leading up to next week's release of the Series 5 collection, and posting some exclusive clips from the DVD and Blu-Ray bonus features. Want to win? Well, you're going to have to earn it!

Here's what we're giving away over the next 24 hours:

- One copy of "Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series" on DVD or Blu-Ray (your choice)
- One Series 5 Sonic Screwdriver (it's awesome — I own one myself)

Here's what you need to do to win:

1. Post a comment at the end of this story telling me your favorite moment in Series 5. Was it The Doctor's post-regeneration food binge? When The Doctor and Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) teamed up with Vincent Van Gogh? Rory's return? Share with the group, please!

2. If you're Twitter-enabled, keep an eye out for when this post hits the official MTV Splash Page Twitter account. ReTweet the full message (including hashtags) to all of your followers.

3. Tomorrow (November 4) at 5 PM Eastern, I'll randomly select one winner from everyone who ReTweeted the message and posted a comment. (That means that if you post a comment and RT the message on Twitter, you have two chances to win instead of one!) Keep in mind: If you want to win via Twitter, you must be following @MTVSplashPage to win, because I need to be able to direct-message the winning account.

4. The winner will receive and email (or direct-message tweet) from me, as well as "Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series" on DVD or Blu-Ray (your choice) and a Series 5 Sonic Screwdriver.

And that's all you have to do!

Oh, and GERONIMO!!!

The Sarah Jane Adventures The Empty Planet Part 2 CBBC Extra - Behind the Scenes

Previewing the 11th Doctor (RyallTime Blog)

Amplify’d from ryalltime.wordpress.com

In January, we relaunch our DOCTOR WHO series, with Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor taking over in comics for the first time. Tony Lee stays on as writer, with folks like Andrew Currie, Richard Piers Rayner, Mark Buckingham (!), and others (including fan-favorite mainstay Matthew Dow Smith, too. And I saw a nice Chris Samnee variant cover for an upcoming issue but can’t show that one just yet) handling art chores on the book.

Tommy Lee Edwards is on for covers each issue (issue 1 is above. And if you’re not reading TURF, the Image book he’s doing with Jonathan Ross, you really need to, it’s really outstanding), and Fables‘ Buckingham contributed a variant cover for issue 1, too. Bucky’s also going to be handling interiors on issue 5, as well as doing covers for a second WHO project we’ve yet to announce. For now, here’s his cover to the new #1:

We’re doing something unique with a special incentive cover for issue 1, too — we’re doing a TARDIS photo cover that is die cut down the center, opening up to reveal, well, this:

Sometimes, the Doctor is tinkering with something he can't take his attention from, which traps him in a revealing conversation.
