Guardian: Louis Marks obituary

Louis Marks

Louis Marks, who has died aged 82, was a writer for some of British television's most popular series and the producer of acclaimed single plays and a six-part adaptation in 1994 of George Eliot's Middlemarch. Marks also scripted four Doctor Who adventures, including The Day of the Daleks (1972), with Jon Pertwee as the Doctor, which introduced the Ogrons as the footsoldiers of the daleks. A scholar of the Italian Renaissance, he transported the fourth incarnation of the Time Lord, played by Tom Baker, to 15th-century Italy for the 1976 adventure The Masque of Mandragora. His script drew on influences such as a Machiavellian comedy, a book-burning priest and the musical surnames Rossini and Scarlatti.

11 Doctors spoof by Draculasaurus

I did this as a joke originally.
The awesome fan artist Paul Hanley [link] was complaining on a forum about how a lot of people were stealing/ reusing parts of his incredible Eleven Doctors piece. He also noted that a lot of it wasn't particularly well done.
I painted this to sort of parody the fact.
I spent about two minutes on it.
Make sure to check out the wonderful original if you haven't seen it already!

A polite request to my fellow bloggers, please note that the Newsroom is not an automated service but constantly manually updated thoughout the day (and night) and takes a lot of hard work by myself, although most items here can be found eventually on the net, the fact that you're reading this means you are using me as a source.... so please either add 'via the TARDIS Newsroom' or a 'thanks for the heads up' to your posts, it gets very frustrating watching other blogs updating obviously using the Newsroom as a reference point and not even having the courtesy of saying where they found it, many thanks for your cooperation.

The 'Doctor Who' Christmas special will feature opera star Katherine Jenkins singing a love song in a futuristic take on Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'.

It will be the first time in the BBC sci-fi show's 47-year history that a musical performance will be integrated into a storyline.

Welsh singer Katherine, 30, is to perform the track specially-written by Murray Gold - who pens all the music for the show - for the December special which producers have promised will be a "real treat".

A source told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "It's going to be an amazing surprise. We have never had anyone burst into song on 'Doctor Who'. It's a TV first for us. This will send ratings sky high."

Shadowlocked reviews The Seeds Of Doom, ...basically concerns the machinations of camp millionaire Harrison Chase, whose plans to buy a simple pod rapidly snowball out of control. Naturally, the pod is much more dangerous than its appearance would suggest, since it’s a Krynoid pod. As the Doctor describes it, it’s a “galactic weed”, only more dangerous than the average plant, since it has a craving for human flesh. Cue six episodes of intense drama that pushes the Doctor’s mental and physical strengths to the limit.

BBC Doctor Who: Your Dream TARDIS (part two)

Amplify’d from www.bbc.co.uk
TARDIS_generic_16x9

When we asked what you'd have in your TARDIS following the launch of the third Doctor Who Adventure Game: TARDIS, we received so many replies we thought we'd share some more of your great ideas.

To start the ball rolling, we asked Matt Smith and Karen Gillan 'What's in Your TARDIS?' and they shared some of their thoughts with us revealing some surprising ideas. Obviously this inspired your creativity and in 'Your Dream TARDIS (part one)' we listed just a few of your responses so here's some more of your fantastic ideas.

Food is evidently an important subject for many of you whether you're like Tom, who'd have a control console 'made entirely out of bananas' or Jaspreet who'd have a greenhouse full of alien vegetables 'to make delicious stews and soups.' For those less concerned about their five-a-day, like Jayme, how about a TARDIS made entirely from sweets where 'the buttons in the control room are made out of gum drop lollies, and the levers are candy canes. The walls and floor in the control room would be made out of jelly, and all of the other rooms would be made out of chocolate,' - Sounds like the TARDIS will be making some extra trips to the Dentist!

As well as a TARDIS made entirely from sweets, Jayme would also like a button to turn the gravity on and off so 'you can just turn it off and chillax floating around'. Sounds like a good idea after eating all those sweets but relaxing and 'taking it easy' is another important subject for many of you. In Charly's TARDIS a 'swimming pool is optional, but comfy chairs are not' and Nichola has a different room for every season including a summer room which is actually a 'portal to a beach' and a winter room 'with a Christmas tree and a warm fireplace' so there's a choice of places to 'relax after all that travelling'.

Other ideas include 'a disco room, with state of the art sound system, disco lights and a bar with drinks from all around the universe', thanks to Sam for that one. If music isn't your thing, how about a whole stadium? 'I would have Sixfields football ground so me and my friends can watch Northampton Town play whenever we want.' As Matt Smith used to play for the Cobblers when he was younger and still follows Northampton Town, we think he'd agree with you on that one Amy!

Once again we were delighted with the variety of ideas you sent in and after all that relaxing and watching your favourite teams, Theodore's TARDIS would 'have rooms full of secrets that are constantly being created, so I could try and find them all, to exercise my brain.' Whereas, Kristina's TARDIS would have a room with a 'tunnel that can transform you into whoever or whatever you want to be for as long as you want.' Now just imagine how much fun you could have playing practical jokes on your friends with a tunnel like that!

Huge thanks to everyone who sent us their ideas, we hope you enjoyed thinking of them as much as we enjoyed reading them. Thanks also to Luke who'd have a science laboratory, Olivia who'd have a wardrobe containing all of the Doctor's outfits past and present, Tom who'd have stairs made from jelly babies and Jodie who'd have a TARDIS containing all eleven Doctor's to date so they'd 'be the smartest dozen in the universe!'

David Tennant on 'cold-blooded' Hollywood, leaving Doctor Who and Matt Smith

Amplify’d from www.radiotimes.com
David Tennant
"There are more actors than cockroaches" in Los Angeles, according to David Tennant. In an interview in the latest issue of Radio Times magazine, the actor discusses his attempts to crack America, his decision to leave Doctor Who - and what he thinks of his replacement Matt Smith.

Tennant quit as the Time Lord after four series and headed to the US to film a pilot for legal drama Rex Is Not Your Lawyer, for which he learned to speak with an American accent. A full run of the show was never commissioned. Does Tennant know why?

"No. These are enormous empires," he tells RT, "and you don't hear anything, you just get told what to do. Word comes down from Mount Olympus and you just trundle on.

"It was a fantastic experience to have [though], and I'm very grateful for that… Los Angeles is a fascinating place and I found myself liking it more and more and loathing it more and more in equal measure. It's a beautiful place and the opportunities are vast, but at the same time it has a real cold-bloodedness."

Have his experiences made him regret leaving Doctor Who? "No, it felt just right, actually," he explains. "It still does. It felt right to pass the baton on and for it to continue to thrive. I think that was all exactly as I would wish it to be."

But Tennant admits to having felt a pang on watching his final outing as the Doctor. "It felt emotional, naturally. It was a weird mixture of emotions, but above all I was very proud of it, very proud to be going out with a bang."

And what does he think of the most recent series and Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith? "Genuinely, I think it's been brilliant. I've loved every second of it. It's a thrill for me to be watching it as a viewer again. I knew Matt was going to be fantastic and he is. He's a great choice and he's knocked it out of the park."

With his time-travelling days behind him, what does the future hold for Tennant? Well, he's recently filmed British romcom The Decoy Bride and is back on our screens from Sunday, starring in four-part BBC1 drama Single Father, a love story about a man bringing up his children following the death of his wife.

But the actor also dropped a subtle hint that there might be things on his mind other than his career. When asked if being around so many kids in the new series had made him broody, Tennant simply replied "How do you know I wasn't broody already?"

Doctor Who - The Pandorica by DeanoSidwell

At last I finally finished my Doctor Who drawing.
I started it ages ago but kept putting it on hold because of other drawings.
I thought I would do something a bit different from normal with this one.
I'm a big Doctor Who fan and so decided to do a drawing of the new Doctor - Matt Smith, I also wanted to put Amy Pond, Rory and River Song into the picture so I came up with the idea of putting in different bits from the Doctor Who 2 part season five finale.
Size is A3, I used HB and 2B 5mm mechanical pencils, HB 7mm mechanical pencil, various different grades of pencil ranging from 2H - 5B, blending stumps, tissues, kneaded and normal erasers.
I hope you like it!
I have now done a little bit more work on it. There was a few little bits that I wasn't happy with and I've improved a couple of bits of shading on it too, I also re-scanned it using a new scanner. The drawing should look a bit better now.

10 most obnoxious superpowered teenagers of all time
Adric (Doctor Who)
Superpowers: Super-rapid healing; mathematical ability
Why he's annoying: God, where do we start? When he's not whining, he's pouting. He also occasionally steals random shit, just for amusement (although this character trait was written out after a few episodes, to replaced by compulsive eating.) The biggest problem with Adric seemed to be that when they introduced a younger, bouncier Doctor (Peter Davison), he couldn't have the same mentor relationship with Adric that Tom Baker's Doctor had. So instead, they became bickering siblings. Also, genuinely scary wig/hair.

Blogtor Who has....
  • Review: The Sarah Jane Adventures: "The Vault of Secrets", or the British UFO Research & Paranormal Studies Society as they like to be called, but more of them later. The Vault of Secrets, penned by Phil Ford (The Waters of Mars from Doctor Who and the wonderful Eye of the Gorgon from the first series of SJA, to name but two), opens in a most dynamic style with little to no dialogue for the first few minutes. And it's not long before we see some the return of some familiar foes, both from the mind of writer Ford.

Digital Spy has Neil Gaiman reveals new 'Who' details....
  • It was previously confirmed that former Coronation Street star Suranne Jones has been cast in the instalment as a young woman named Idris.
  • Gaiman apparently told reporters at the recent New Yorker festival that the character "may be an old friend of the Doctor's with a new face".
  • The writer also admitted that Doctor Who was part of his "internal landscape" and revealed that his script takes inspiration from Patrick Troughton's final story as the Doctor, first broadcast in 1969.
  • "At one point, I steal a plot from an old episode called 'The War Games'," he said.

WHOGold has Beyond the Inside of the Edge of the Brink of Whatever, the title of this week's Doctor Who Omnibus is a bone of contention for many fans. Do you call it Inside The Spaceship? Or is it The Edge Of Destruction? Or even Beyond The Sun? I bet there's one person who even calls it TARDIS Cutaway. Well, I'm hedging my bets on this one, so I'm opting for my own title: Beyond the Inside of the Edge of the Brink of Destruction. Simples.

This is the only original footage of the costumes sold at the BBC/Bonhams auction in 1990. Tea with Morbius has State Of Decay, disconcertingly, after the attempt to break into 'hard science' territory with Full Circle, we are back in Hammer horror territory with a story about old fashioned fanged vampires. This story seems like it is in the wrong season and ought to be a Hinchcliffe-era story (Terrance Dicks originally wrote it to open Season 15, but it got shelved until it was picked up again by the economically-minded John Nathan Turner). What sets it apart from all those Hinchlife Hammer re-workings is its magnificent production values which put the Seventies stories to shame.

Unreality SF has a review for Doctor Who: A Death in the Family, Maggie Stables returns to Doctor Who in A Death in the Family, alongside the Seventh Doctor and Ace.

Classical Gallifrey has Serial 70: The Time Warrior, Doctor Who, as television is, is very writer-centric. Different writers sculpt different types of stories and have different visions of what the show could be. They write slightly tweaked and different variations on particular Doctors and use unique conventions and world views to sculpt their stories.
