This week's Step Back in Time features a clip from the Second Doctor adventure, The Web of Fear, which we present as a tribute to writer Mervyn Haisman who died last week.
For Doctor Who fans, Mervyn will be forever remembered for The Abominable Snowmen, The Web of Fear and The Dominators. He penned all three adventures with co-writer Henry Lincoln, with the first of these introducing the deadly robotic Yeti. The follow-up to that story, The Web of Fear, included the debut of Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, a character who returned many times after his promotion to the rank of Brigadier.
We've chosen this scene from The Web of Fear as it shows how Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln could create memorably spooky scenes, cranking up the tension and frights, even without the Doctor's presence! Mervyn Haisman also wrote for many other popular BBC dramas including The Onedin Line and Howard's Way. He was born in London, 1928 and died October, 2010.
