"There are more actors than cockroaches" in Los Angeles, according to David Tennant. In an interview in the latest issue of Radio Times magazine, the actor discusses his attempts to crack America, his decision to leave Doctor Who - and what he thinks of his replacement Matt Smith.
Tennant quit as the Time Lord after four series and headed to the US to film a pilot for legal drama Rex Is Not Your Lawyer, for which he learned to speak with an American accent. A full run of the show was never commissioned. Does Tennant know why?
"No. These are enormous empires," he tells RT, "and you don't hear anything, you just get told what to do. Word comes down from Mount Olympus and you just trundle on.
"It was a fantastic experience to have [though], and I'm very grateful for that… Los Angeles is a fascinating place and I found myself liking it more and more and loathing it more and more in equal measure. It's a beautiful place and the opportunities are vast, but at the same time it has a real cold-bloodedness."
Have his experiences made him regret leaving Doctor Who? "No, it felt just right, actually," he explains. "It still does. It felt right to pass the baton on and for it to continue to thrive. I think that was all exactly as I would wish it to be."
But Tennant admits to having felt a pang on watching his final outing as the Doctor. "It felt emotional, naturally. It was a weird mixture of emotions, but above all I was very proud of it, very proud to be going out with a bang."
And what does he think of the most recent series and Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith? "Genuinely, I think it's been brilliant. I've loved every second of it. It's a thrill for me to be watching it as a viewer again. I knew Matt was going to be fantastic and he is. He's a great choice and he's knocked it out of the park."
With his time-travelling days behind him, what does the future hold for Tennant? Well, he's recently filmed British romcom The Decoy Bride and is back on our screens from Sunday, starring in four-part BBC1 drama Single Father, a love story about a man bringing up his children following the death of his wife.
But the actor also dropped a subtle hint that there might be things on his mind other than his career. When asked if being around so many kids in the new series had made him broody, Tennant simply replied "How do you know I wasn't broody already?"
