New Doctor Who star 'conned' into acting

This is The West Country
A DRAMA teacher from Taunton ‘conned’ the new Doctor in cult television series Doctor Who into taking to the stage as a teenager, the County Gazette can reveal.

Twenty-six-year-old Matt Smith – the eleventh incarnation and youngest Doctor Who ever – wanted to be a top footballer rather than a television star and played in the youth teams of Leicester City and Nottingham Forest until a back injury forced him to quit.

But Jerry Hardingham, Matt’s drama teacher at Northampton School for Boys, always believed he was destined for the stage.

And when the 14-year-old failed to audition for a part in a school production of 12 Angry Men, his biggest supporter cast him in the play without him knowing.

Speaking to the County Gazette, Jerry, now a drama teacher at West Somerset Community College in Minehead, said: “We had a new theatre opening, and the production of 12 Angry Men was a big opportunity for Matt, but he didn’t turn up for the auditions.

“I rang his mum who told me he was on holiday, so I told her he was doing this part in the play – no discussion.

“He was so self-effacing and was thinking of doing history at Sheffield University but me, his mum, dad and another drama teacher were telling him not to go.......read more here

Doctor Who choice gets thumbs-up from fans

WalesOnline
HE’S a relatively unknown 26-year-old about to step into the shoes of the actor recently voted the best Doctor Who of all time.

But the sci-fi show’s huge community of fanatical viewers yesterday gave a largely positive reaction to the potentially under-whelming unmasking of fresh-faced Matt Smith as the 11th man to play the 903-year-old Time Lord.

The identity of the new Doctor, who has questioning brown eyes, angular features and a flop of a fringe, was finally revealed on a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential on BBC One on Saturday night.

The former trainee footballer, from Northampton, will take over from 37-year-old David Tennant when he leaves the show at the end of 2009. His television debut was in the 2006 adaptation of Philip Pullman’s The Ruby in the Smoke, starring former Doctor Who companion Billie Piper.

But despite – and indeed, largely because of – his rather humble reputation, the announcement of Smith’s appointment was received warmly among the show’s online fans yesterday.

On the programme’s forum on the SciFi.com website, Mr Bryn wrote: “I was a bit worried when they said he was the youngest ever, but I’m really pleasantly surprised. As (executive producer Steven) Moffat says, he’s young but he also looks old at the same time.”

And Calibanz added: “I get the feeling that this casting is going to prove the right choice. I was hoping for a relative unknown without a fixed public image and the Moff has gone for that.”

Across on the forum hosted by the Kasterborous corr Online Magazine, atomickarma posted: “It’s a great piece of casting, you know, and I cannot wait to see what he does with it. His age came as a shock when I first got wind of him this morning, but I’ve eaten my hat, everything else is as it was, so bring it on!”

But the welcomes to the new Doctor weren’t all so gushing.

Funcho wrote pithily: “Too young! High School Musical in space!”. while Oldskool138 criticised Smith’s posture, adding: “The Doc’s supposed to have a commanding presence (even McCoy’s Doc had presence). This guy looks like he slouches into a room rather than one who’s trying to solve a problem and help people out.

“I’m not a huge fan of the question mark vest or technicolor nightmare coat but can we have the Doctor dress a little more eccentric rather than like he just walked out of a boutique. His clothes should be more Salvation Army than Rodeo Drive.

“And the dude’s too young. There, I said it and I’d say it again if I had to. Peter Davison was young but not as young as this guy. To me, it looks a bit like stunt casting.

“They have the old fans watching the show and their young kids but they don’t really have that 18-28 demographic.”

In Wales, the reaction among fans could best be described as cautious optimism.

Martin Hackett, a historian from Trewern near Welshpool, who has been a Doctor Who fan since the 1960s, said Smith seemed “incredibly young” to play the 900-year-old Time Lord, but added that it was too early to judge him.

“Tennant has such charisma and had established himself in Casanova before striking a rapport as the Doctor, so it will be difficult for anyone to follow him,” he said.

“A lot of names were mooted for the role, including Vic Reeves and Graham Norton, because it would take a big personality to carry off the role.

“I was expecting someone established like Don Warrington who played Phillip in Rising Damp.

“It will be hard to judge Smith until we see him.”

And Owen Jones, 18, from Cardiff, said it was odd to think that his hero is only eight years older than himself.

“It was quite a shock when I saw him and I was dubious,” he said.

“But after hearing his eagerness and enthusiasm for the role he seemed to fit it,” he said. “They have gone for a unique doctor who will bring flair to the role.”

Extended MATT SMITH Interview - Doctor Who Confidential: The Eleventh Doctor

Eleventh Doctor Revealed!

BBC - Doctor Who - News
The BBC today announced that Matt Smith has been cast in the role of the Doctor in the iconic BBC series Doctor Who. Smith will be the eleventh Time Lord and will take over from David Tennant who leaves the show at the end of 2009. He will be seen in the forthcoming fifth series that will be broadcast in 2010.

The fifth series will also have a new lead writer and Executive Producer in the form of the BAFTA award winning writer Steven Moffat who is taking over from Russell T Davies. Moffat will be joined by Piers Wenger who will be the new Executive Producer for BBC Wales making the show.

Following David Tennant's decision to step down at the end of 2009, the team behind the new series set about casting the new Doctor so that new adventures could be created and scripts written with Matt in mind.

The identity of the new Doctor was revealed on a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential that was broadcast on BBC One on January 3rd at 17.35hrs. In it Smith revealed his initial reaction at taking on such a legendary role and his thoughts on what direction the Doctor might now be going with him playing the part.

Matt Smith said of his new role "I'm just so excited about the journey that is in front of me. It's a wonderful privilege and challenge that I hope I will thrive on. I feel proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the show so thrilling.

"David Tennant has made the role his own, brilliantly with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him. The challenge for me is to do justice to the show's illustrious past, my predecessors and most importantly to those who watch it. I really cannot wait."

Lead writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat said "The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe. As soon as Matt walked through the door and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man. 2010 is a long time away but rest assured the Eleventh Doctor is coming - and the universe has never been so safe."

Piers Wenger, Head Of Drama, BBC Wales added "With two hearts, a ferocious mind and over 900 years of experience behind him, it's not every 26 year old actor who can take on a role like the Doctor but within moments of meeting Matt he showed the skill and imagination needed to create a Doctor all of his own.

It's just the beginning of the journey for Matt but with Steven Moffat's scripts and the expertise of the production team in Cardiff behind him, there is no one more perfect than him to be taking the TARDIS to exciting new futures when the series returns in 2010."

Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama added "I am delighted to see Matt take on this iconic role. It will see him continuing his relationship with the BBC following his performances in Ruby In The Smoke and Party Animals, and his upcoming role in Moses Jones. The combination of Matt, Steven and Piers will, I know, take Doctor Who onto new and even dizzier heights."

Jay Hunt, Controller. BBC ONE said "Matt Smith will be a mesmerising eleventh Time Lord, true to the spirit of the show. He is a worthy successor to David Tennant who has been utterly remarkable in the role and promises to continue to be in next year's four special episodes."

Exclusive interview with Matt Smith coming soon.

And the 11th Doctor is.......

Matt Smith

It's been officially confirmed that 26 year old Matt Smith will play the Doctor in 2010.

In 2007 he starred alongside Hollywood A-lister Christian Slater in a stage version of the film Swimming With Sharks.

The 26-year-old was also shortlisted as an "outstanding newcomer"
in the Evening Standard Awards after he shot to prominence on television screens as Danny Foster in BBC Two's political drama,
Party Animals.

In Swimming With Sharks, Matt took the role of Guy, a personal assistant to monstrous movie producer Buddy Ackerman.

Matt again hit TV screens when BBC One broadcast an adaptation of The Shadow in The North, the second book in a quartet by novelist Philip Pullman.

The literary series charted the adventures of Sally Lockhart, a feisty young Victorian heroine.

Matt appeared alongside Billie Piper, with whom he also worked on the first in Pullman's series, The Ruby in the Smoke, which was screened last Christmas.

That makes three times working with the Doctor Who actress; having
also appeared in an episode of her risque ITV series, Secret Diary of a
Call Girl.

The pair enjoy working together and have become great friends.

Raised in Northampton, Matt's dream was not always to be an
actor.

He demonstrated an early talent for football, playing for both Leicester
City's and Nottingham Forest's youth academies, but had to stop when he suffered a back injury.

It was a former school teacher, Mr Hardingham, who encouraged the
youngster to take drama as an A-level subject.

This led him to a drama and creative writing course at the University of East Anglia after he left Northampton School for Boys.

Matt said: "I had a drama teacher at school who encouraged me and I
found it was something I enjoyed. I did an A-level in drama, without any particular aspirations at the time of becoming an actor."

Then the teenage Matt set his sights on acting and has never
looked back.

Despite not attending drama school, Matt has managed to land strong roles both on stage and television. This has been down to securing a
place at the National Youth Theatre.

One of his performances saw him playing Thomas Becket in Murder

In The Cathedral, acted out atWestminster Cathedral before a Royal
and celebrity-studded audience including Prince Edward and actors Sir Ian McKellan and Simon Callow.

Matt said: "The great thing about the National Youth Theatre is the
great support it has from actors.

"It is a marvellous platform for young actors and I would encourage
any young people to apply. I've met hordes of people through it."

Following on from his success at the youth theatre, Matt, who is from
Great Billing, managed to make a full-time career out of acting once
he finished his degree.

He beat off competition from thousands of other hopefuls to win a
coveted role as one of the schoolboys in Alan Bennett's multi-award winning The History Boys, which ran at the National Theatre in London
before touring the country.

Other theatre roles have included Henry in That Face at the Royal
Court in London, Paul in On The Shore Of The Wide World at the Royal Exchange in London and Arnold in Fresh Kills, a production by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder at the Royal Court.

Matt's mother, Lynne, a sales executive for the Chronicle & Echo's sister magazine, Image, said she was very proud of her son's success.

He now has fans queueing for his autograph at the stage door and
they also left him Christmas presents.

Lynne said: "It is unbelievable really, but when you are so close to
someone and it is your son everyone's talking about, you have to stand back a bit from it. Every mum would think their child is good." (source: Northampton Chronicle)
